The newest division in the IFBB is the bikini division. It has become very popular since it was introduced in 2010.
The idea of swimwear for men and women came to prominence with the advances in transportation that allowed more tourists to gain exposure to hot beaches and inviting seas. The growing interest in swimming led Australia's Annette Kellerman to first try and swim the English Channel (the first attempt by a woman) in 1905 and then show off her abilities to American audiences with an early form of synchronized swimming in 1907. She gained more attention for her figure-hugging and body-baring swimsuit that brought on an arrest, but increased cultural curiosity about whether smaller swimsuits might be better.
From the 1940s onward, smaller swimsuits like the bikini and swimsuit models became a cultural phenomenon in North America. Classic pinup girl Betty Grable was one of the earliest success stories in the history of swimsuit models while Farrah Fawcett's 1976 pose in a red swimsuit was an iconic shot that had men lusting after her and women trying desperately to emulate her look. The long-running Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has only added more swimsuit models to the mix and cemented women and swimsuits as a timeless example of modern beauty.
Swimsuit Models Fact
Before swimsuit models graced wall calendars, the idea of bathing publicly in swimsuits was taboo. In the 19th century, bathing machines allowed men and women to bathe privately in their swimsuits. As our inhibitions have grown smaller, so have the swimsuits, while the number of swimsuit models has only increased.
